Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release

CLINTON, Iowa – Aaron Peel hit two home runs to power the Kernels past Clinton, 3-2, Thursday night in the first game of Midwest League doubleheader Thursday night at Alliant Energy Field.

Clinton won the nightcap, 3-2.

The split, coupled with Kane County's loss at Peoria, put the Kernels (9-5) into a first-place tie with Kane County in the Western Division.

Micah Posey (3-0) allowed only three hits in 6.2 innings while striking out six in the opener. He was lifted after Emerson Frostad belted a two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh that cut the Kernels' lead to 3-2. Bob Zimmermann came out of the Kernels' bullpen and struck out pinch hitter Brock Jacobsen to end the game. Zimmermann picked up his second save.

Howie Kendrick was 3-for-3 with a double, triple and RBI for the Kernels in the nightcap. Michel Simard (1-1) gave up four hits and three runs in five innings and took the loss.

The Kernels close out their four-game series at Clinton on Friday at 6 p.m. They return home Saturday to start a four-game homestand. The Kernels host Kane County at 5 p.m. on Saturday and 2 p.m. on Sunday. The Swing of the Quad Cities comes in for games Monday and Tuesday. Both games start at 6:30 p.m. All Kernels games can be heard on The Zone, ESPN Radio 1600-AM, with John Rodgers.
