April 23, 2004 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Dayton Dragons News Release
Dayton, OH â The Dayton Dragons (7-8) swept both games of the double header from the Swing of the Quad Cities (6-9) to salvage a split of the four games series. 8,078 saw an outstanding pitching performance highlighted by a three run fifth inning to take game one 4-0. Game two had equally good pitching, but it was a grand-slam homerun in the bottom of the sixth inning which propelled Dayton to the victory 4-1 at Fifth Third Field Friday night.
Calvin Medlock (W, 2-0) picked up the win in game one for the Dragons as he worked 5.2 innings scattering just three hits, one walk and he struck out eight, while not allowing a runner past second base. Carlos Guevara (S, 1) finished the evening to notch his first save of the 2004 campaign. Guevara recorded the final four outs in relief not allowing any hits, runs, or walks striking out one.
Dayton used a three run fifth inning to tag Swing starter Adam Harben (L, 0-2) with the mound loss. Harben had allowed just one hit and had struck out ten leading into the fifth before the Dragon bats erupted. Ben Himes led off with a triple and scored on Ryan Fry's double. Fry then trotted home in front of Walter Olmstead's first homerun of the year to make it 3-0 Dayton after five innings.
Fry wasn't finished as he blasted his team high third homer of the year off reliever Jon Uhl (ND) with one out in the sixth inning to cap the scoring for game one giving the Dragons a 4-0 win.
In game two Quad Cities took a 1-0 advantage in the top of the fourth inning off Dragon starting pitcher Jon George (ND) with three singles in the inning. Ben Pattee started the inning with a hit, went to second on a single from Brock Peterson, and scored on a single to left from Sam Taylor. George went 5.0 innings allowing one run, five hits, two walks, and he struck out five in not receiving a decision.
Ricky Barrett (ND) kept the Dayton hitters miffed for five innings allowing just two hits, two walks, and striking out nine before yielding to Nick Blackburn (L, 1-2) out of the bullpen. Luis Bolivar greeted Blackburn with a single, Joey Votto followed suit, and after a strikeout Himes loaded the bases with a single of his own. That set the stage for Habelito Hernandez who deposited a belt high changeup into the left field seats for a grand slam homerun to give the dragons a 4-1 lead. Blackburn took the loss allowing four runs on four hits in one inning of work, while striking out one.
Don Gemmell (W, 1-0) picked up the win working a perfect sixth inning. Gemmell retired in order the only three hitters he faced striking out one. David Shafer (S, 3) preserved the win as he slammed the door in the top of the seventh inning. Shafer recorded his third save not allowing a base runner striking out one. The Dragons will be back in action Saturday night opening a four game series with the Fort Wayne Wizards. ESPN Radio 1410 Wing AM will carry the game live with the pre game show beginning at 6:30 pm. RHP Brock Till will get the start for the Dragons while RHP Eddie Bonine will throw for the Wizards. The first pitch will follow the pre game show at 7:00.
