West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
DAYTON, OH - The West Michigan Whitecaps offense continued to struggle in a 2-0 loss to the Dayton Dragons at Fifth Third Field Monday night.
After Monday's loss, the Whitecaps are hitting a Midwest League low .131 as a team over their first five games of the season, scoring just six runs.
The game was largely uneventful, and lasted a season-fastest 2:00. The 'Caps got a leadoff single from Blaise Salter in the second inning, but didn't get another hit until Cam Gibson's leadoff bunt-single in the ninth. In the sixth, Dayton scored their only runs on a pair of fielder's choices by Jose Siri and Taylor Trammell to take a 2-0 lead. Once the 'Caps got their baserunners, West Michigan hit into three double plays during the contest.
Austin Sodders started on the mound for West Michigan and pitched well, going five shutout innings while striking out six. Reliever Joe Navilhon (0-1) allowed both Dayton runs in three innings to take his first loss of the season. Dayton starter Anthony Jordan (1-0) tossed six innings and gave up just one hit and struck out four to pick up his first win of the year. Dragons reliever Joe Kuhnel tossed a scoreless ninth to record his second save of the year. West Michigan falls to 3-2 while Dayton improves to 3-2 in 2017. It's the first time the Whitecaps have been shutout after having dealt three straight shutouts to the South Bend Cubs to begin the season.
