Clinton LumberKings News Release

CLINTON, IA - The Clinton LumberKings got into the win column with a 4-2 come-from-behind win over the Beloit Snappers on Monday night at Ashford University Field. Rayder Ascanio had the big hit in a three-run bottom of the eighth, driving home two with a two-out double that put the LumberKings (1-4) on top for good.

Nick Wells made his season debut for Clinton and impressed over his 5 and 2/3 innings of work, the longest outing by a LumberKings pitcher this year. The lefty struck out nine, also a season high for LumberKings pitchers, and walked none while limiting the Snappers (2-3) to a single run.

Beloit pushed across the first run of the game in the top of the fourth. In the games most controversial moment, Edwin Diaz lined a triple down the right field line that rolled by the bench of the Snappers bullpen. Right fielder Anthony Jimenez lifted his arms up to indicate the ball was unplayable but did not get the deadball call from base umpire Tanner Dodson that would have put Diaz at second. With the confusion, Diaz raced to third with the leadoff triple. Wells retired the next batter on a fly ball to shallow center, Miguel Mercedes followed with a soft RBI single to right to score Diaz from third. LumberKings manager Pat Shine was tossed on the next pitch when he continued to argue about the Diaz triple that led off the inning.

Clinton answered Beloit's run in the top of the fourth by scoring a run in the bottom of the inning. Dimas Ojeda drove home the run when he doubled to left center with two men on. Bryson Brigman scored easily on the play but tail runner Conner Hale was tagged out at the plate on a Snappers well executed relay.

The game remained even at one apiece until Beloit broke the tie with a run in the seventh. LumberKings reliever Jack Anderson hit the first batter of the inning and Luis Barrera followed with a single. With one out in the inning, and runners at first and second JaVon Shelby singled to right to put the Snappers on top, 2-1. The inning would have been worse if not for a LumberKings relay throw from right fielder Anthony Jimenez to second basemen Brigman to catcher Yojhan Quevedo that cut down Shelby at the plate who was trying to score on a Luke Persico double.

In the bottom of the eighth, the LumberKings rallied for three runs to take the lead. Luis Rengifo was hit by a Dalton Sawyer pitch to open the inning and scored the tying run through a combination balk, Sawyer's (0-1) second of the game, Ojeda single and throwing error by catcher Theroux on a snap throw to first.

Rayder Ascanio then smashed the game's deciding two-out two-RBI double to center off Snappers new pitcher Will Gilbert.

Leading 4-2, Matt Clancy (1-0) closed the door in the ninth, his second inning of work, to earn his first win of the season. The lefty struck out the final five men he faced to give the LumberKings their first win of the 2017 season.

The LumberKings will now play game two of their three-game set with the Snappers. RHP Ljay Newsome (0-1, 15.75) will get the start for Clinton and face Beloit's LHP Ty Damron (0-0, 0.00). First pitch is slated for 6:30 PM with the pregame show on 100.3 FM WCCI beginning at 6:15 PM Erik Oas will be on the call. Tuesday will be the first Sweet and Salty Tuesday with 50 cent popcorn and cotton candy all game long.
