Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
GENEVA, ILL. - The Kane County Cougars rode a shutout start from Ryan Atkinson to a 2-0 victory Monday against the Cedar Rapids Kernels at Northwestern Medicine Field. Atkinson totaled a career-high 10 strikeouts and led a combined shutout to claim game one of a three-game series .
Atkinson shined in his Midwest League debut for Kane County (5-0). He kept the Kernels (2-3) scoreless over his 5.2 innings pitched, escaping a bases-loaded jam during the fourth in the toughest situation that he faced. Atkinson was followed by scoreless relief from Wei-Chieh Huang and Tommy Eveld that finished the shutout victory.
The Cougars quickly grabbed a 1-0 lead for Atkinson in the first inning. Marcus Wilson and Jazz Chisholm hit back-to-back one-out singles to set up Ramon Hernandez. He produced a single of his own that allowed Wilson to score the game's first run.
Chisholm stretched the lead to 2-0 within the bottom of the third. He cleared the right-field wall with a solo home run - his first round-tripper of the season - to double Kane County's advantage.
Huang and Eveld kept Kane County's scoreless relief streak alive in Monday's win. Huang finished the sixth for Atkinson and kept Cedar Rapids off the scoreboard through the eighth for a hold. Eveld pitched a perfect ninth inning to get the save. Cougars relievers have now gone 21.1 innings without a run allowed to start the season.
Kernels right-hander Clark Beeker took the loss despite recording Cedar Rapids' third consecutive quality start. Beeker gave up both of Kane County's runs while working a career-high seven innings pitched. He was relieved by Hector Lujan, who posted a scoreless eighth inning. Both pitchers made their Kernels debuts in the defeat.
Game two of this three-game series is scheduled for Tuesday at Noon. Kernels right-hander Tyler Beardsley (0-0, -.--) will make his season debut in the contest. Listen to Tuesday's matinee with Chris Kleinhans-Schulz online at www.kmryradio.com and www.kernels.com .
