White Sox Ink Freedom's Chris Curley
July 6, 2012 - Frontier League (FL)
Florence Y'alls News Release
FLORENCE, KY - Chris Curley became the second Florence Freedom player this season to be picked up by a Major League organization, as the Chicago White Sox purchased the contract of the Freedom's all-star third baseman Thursday evening.
Curley, an Edgewood resident and graduate of Beechwood High School, has starred for the Freedom this season. At the time of his signing with the White Sox, Curley led the Freedom in runs (35), home runs (10), RBI (44) and batting average (.356).
Curley was elected to represent the Freedom in the 2012 Frontier League all-star game last week along with catcher Jim Jacquot and shortstop Junior Arrojo.
"Obviously we're extremely proud of Chris," Freedom General Manager Josh Anderson said. "He's been unbelievable this year for us and when you put up those kind of numbers and you're as good a player as Chris is, it's only a matter of time before a big league club comes and wants to sign you."
Playing for an affiliated club is nothing new for Curley as he was with the Atlanta Braves organization from 2009-10. He advanced to high A Myrtle Beach in 2010 before joining the Freedom in 2011.
Curley will be sent to the Kannapolis Intimidators, the South Atlantic League high A affiliate within White Sox organization.
Earlier this season, Stephen Shackleford was signed by the Seattle Mariners. Shackelford is currently at low A Clinton with a 2.77 ERA in 13 innings.
The Florence Freedom are members of the Independent Frontier League and play their home games at the Home of the Florence Freedom, located at 7950 Freedom Way in Florence, Kentucky. Tickets for the 2012 Freedom season, along with tickets to see Foreigner live in concert at August 4 are on sale now by calling 859-594-HITS (4487).
