Normal CornBelters News Release
JOLIET - The Normal CornBelters, presented by Illinois Corn Farmers, gave up four runs in the third inning with three more in the seventh and lost their sixth straight, 9-2 to the Joliet Slammers on Friday night at Silver Cross Field.
The Slammers used a long ball to open the scoring in the first inning with a home run out of the park in right field by Erik Lis. With the bases loaded in the second due to a pair of hits and a walk, Lis struck again with a double down the right field line to increase the Joliet lead to 3-0. On the next batter after the double, CornBelters starting pitcher Daniel Britt was ejected arguing a ball call, and Normal manager Chad Parker was also thrown out a short time later. Brendon Smith relieved Britt, and the hitter, Abel Nieves, then singled to right to drive in both remaining runners and give the Slammers a 5-0 lead going into the fourth inning.
Joliet added a run in the fifth when a hit and two walks loaded the bases, and a sacrifice fly by Josh Lyon scored Hector Pellot to give the Slammers a 6-0 after five innings.
The Belters broke through in the seventh when Sam Judah led off with a single by Andrew Cohn and a walk to Ty Wiesemeyer to load the bases with one out. Chico Gomez singled in Judah, and Cohn scored when the ball was misplayed in left to put the Belters within 6-2 going to the bottom of the seventh.
The Slammers put three more on the board in the seventh, with a hit batsman and four hits off reliever Josh Joseph including an RBI single by Abel Nieves and two runs driven in by Matt Mirabal to push the host's lead to 9-2.
Britt (3-4) took the loss while Slammers starter Jacob Sanchez went six innings to win his professional debut.
The CornBelters continue the series on Saturday at 6:05 p.m. in Joliet with right-hander Ryan Krumlauf (2-2, 2.77 ERA) starting on the mound for the Belters against Slammers righty Jim Schult (3-2, 4.50 ERA). Pre-game on WJBC.com begins at 5:50.
