Last time out.
The Joliet Slammers left 16 runners on base in their series finale with the Florence Freedom in a 5-4 loss at Silver Cross Field on Thursday night. This marks the second straight series Joliet has been swept at home, their fourth consecutive loss, and the second time in the series with Florence where they blew a lead. Things started off great for Joliet, pounding four runs across through the first two innings courtesy of two-RBI singles by David Fox and Erik Lis, making it 4-0. Slammers pitching went on to give up five unanswered runs in the loss. Florence struck in the third with an RBI single by David Harris, and cut the lead in half an inning later when John Malloy slapped a single to bring a run home. The Freedom jumped ahead with three runs in the sixth to take the 5-4 lead off base hits by Jim Jacquot and Pierre LePage. Brian Smith took the loss for Joliet.
For Starters.
Jacob Sanchez is making his professional debut tonight. He was the Midwest Collegiate Conference Pitcher of the Year in 2012. He led the MCC in strikeouts and innings pitched, was second in wins and third in earned run average and opponents' batting average (.208). Sanchez obliterated the Iowa Wesleyan single season strikeout record, becoming the first player in school history to go over 100 K's in a season, and also tied the school record for wins in a season. He also was a recipient of a Gold Glove award with one error in 29 chances in the field.
