London Rippers News Release
LONDON, ONTARIO - Jose Vargas drove in three runs, two on his 17th homer of the year, lifting the Traverse City Beach Bums (32-14) to a 10-7 win over London (17-29).
In a back-and-forth opening to the game, Chase Burch smacked a two-RBI double in the top of the 1st to get Traverse City off to a 2-0 start.
Mark Samuelson responded with an RBI double of his own in the bottom of the frame, tightening the game to 2-1. He scored on David Christensen's RBI double to tie it at 2.
Aaron Glaum created his own offense in the 2nd , getting on after a fielding error, then stealing second and third, then scoring on a wild pitch to give London a 3-2 advantage.
But Vargas hit his 10th homer in the last 10 games in the 3rd, giving the Beach Bums a 4-3 lead, which became 6-3 when Sean Gusrang hit a two-run homer of his own.
However, three straight singles loaded the bases for London in the 3rd , Christensen walked home the 4th run and newest Ripper, Ben Magsig made it 6-5 with a sac fly.
Traverse City created an 8-5 lead in 4th , until Brad Agustin doubled home Glaum, who stole his third base of the game in the at-bat, bringing London within two at 8-6.
Mark Samuelson made it 8-7 with an RBI single, but that is as close as the Rippers would get.
Rippers' starter, Matt Schimpf (2-4) lasted 3 innings, allowing 8 runs, 7 earned, walking three and striking out two.
London and Traverse City hook up for the second game of the series tomorrow at 7pm.
All-Star Jamie Richmond (4-2 2.69) starts for London against Jacob Clem (3-4 2.98).
