River City Rascals News Release

Crestwood, Ill. - For the first time since the walk-off win against Gateway June 20th, the Rascals won the first game of a series behind a Nick Kennedy four-hit, eight-inning gem and an offense that got production from the top to bottom of the order.

The Rascals (24-21) fell behind in the first inning when a run scored on an error by Charlie Lisk at third, but River City responded in the second, tying the game at 1-1 on a Matt Serna fielder's choice following a pair of single and walk.

Charlie Lisk atoned for the mistake in the third. Curran Redal singled to start the inning and after Jason Patton singled, an error allowed Redal to score before Lisk crushed a two-run homer to left for a 4-1 lead.

The Thunderbolts (26-18) scored another unearned run in the sixth following an error at third but again River City responded in the seventh, plating two more runs on a walk, single, and error to stretch the lead to 6-2.

Kennedy did not give up his third hit until all-star Brandon Decker went up top to start the seventh, but Kennedy finished the seventh and threw a perfect eighth before closer Brandon Cunniff entered for his first save opportunity since taking over the role from Dustin Umberger.

A leadoff walk scored on a pair of singles but Cunniff struck out two including the final batter to record his first save this season after nine in 2011.

Game two is set for 6:05 CT tomorrow night.
