Traverse City Beach Bums News Release

LONDON, ONTARIO - The Traverse City Beach Bums scored eight runs in the first four innings in their first trip to LaBatt Park on the year before holding on for a 10-7 win over the London Rippers.

The Beach Bums got on the board early as Chase Burch doubled home Brian Heere and Ryan Still who reached on an error and a hit batsman respectively, putting TC up 2-0. London got the runs back in the bottom of the inning on a double by Mark Samuelson and a single by David Christensen to score Stephen Cardullo and Samuelson respectively. The Rippers then took the lead in the bottom of the second on a wild pitch bringing home Aaron Glaum, who had reached on an error.

Traverse City responded in the third as both Jose Vargas and Sean Gusrang both hit two-run homeruns, their 17th and 6th of the year respectively for a 6-3 Beach Bums lead. After London got two of the runs back in the bottom of the inning, TC pushed the lead back to three at 8-5 when with Brian Heere on first and Kyle Eveland on second, Ryan Still doubled to bring home Eveland and Vargas hit a sac fly to drive in Heere for an 8-5 Beach Bums advantage.

Undaunted, the Rippers plated two in the bottom of the fourth on a Brad Augustin double and a Samuelson single to cut the lead to 8-7. TC would start to take command with a run in the fifth on a throwing error by Jim Vahalik to score Heere to go up 9-7.

It was at that point that the pitching started to respond as David Deminsky tossed three scoreless innings to place the Beach Bums on more solid footing. Sam Brown followed, tossing two perfect innings in the seventh and eighth. Traverse City would salt the game away with back-to-back doubles in the eighth by Kyle Colligan and Gusrang.

Deminsky (3-0) picked up the win in relief with Matt Miller going a scoreless ninth for his third save. Matt Schimpf (2-4) took the loss for London.

The middle game of the series comes up on Saturday as a pair of All-Stars face off with Jacob Clem (3-4, 2.98) going for the Beach Bums against Jamie Richmond (4-2 2.69) for London. Coverage on Sunny Country 101.9 will begin at 6:40 outside of a scheduled 7:00 p.m. first pitch.
