Wheaties Obtain Veteran Blueliner

Brandon, Manitoba -- The Western Hockey League's Brandon Wheat Kings solidified their blueline corps at Thursday's Trade Deadline with the acquisition of 19-year old defenceman Matt McCue from the Chilliwack Bruins.

In exchange for the 4-year WHL veteran, the Wheat Kings gave up a fourth round pick in the 2009 bantam draft.

A former second round pick of the Spokane Chiefs (27th overall) in the 2003 draft, the Cochrane, Alberta product has four assists and 111 minutes in penalties in 42 games with the Bruins this season. During his WHL career, the 6'5" 216 lb. McCue has appeared in 158 games, scoring 9 goals and 31 points while accumulating 346 penalty minutes.

Meanwhile in another move, the Wheat Kings released 19-year old forward Robert Brandis. A former first round Import pick of the Saskatoon Blades, the Slovakian born Brandis had one goal and two points in 28 games this season.

Today's moves leaves the Wheat Kings with 23 players on their active roster - two goalkeepers, eight defencemen and thirteen forwards.

Brandon kicks off a 2-game weekend homestand Friday night against the visiting Swift Current Broncos. Friday's game will feature a Special Salute to Canadian Forces with demonstrations and displays throughout Westman Place.
