Sportsman's Dinner Lineup Finalized
January 10, 2008 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Brandon, Manitoba - With this year's Sportsman's Dinner less than a month away, the Western Hockey League's Brandon Wheat Kings are excited to announce that they have filled their lineup of speakers for the event, scheduled for Thursday, February 7th in the Keystone Centre's UCT Pavillion.
Joining Dennis Hull and Sportsnet's Ray Ferraro at the dinner, which is held annually to raise money for the hockey club's Schlarship Fund, will be comedian John Caponera of Los Angeles.
Caponera always knew he wanted to be in show business but in what dimension was undetermined until the summer of 1979 when he entered a talent show at a local bar in Chicago. After doing several impressions, he walked away with the five hundred dollar winner's pot and a realization that he might have something to offer in the world of comedy.
Caponera's instincts proved right and after two years working the Chicago comedy club circuit, John took his act on the road where he was immediately accepted . He has honed his act over a eighteen year career performing to audiences all over the world. Caponera is considered a comic's comic, a true professional offering a mix of material from topical to impressions to characterizations to stories and one liners.
In addition to his comedy, John has appeared in a number of television programs including Comedy Central's sport show "Jocks", "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno", "The Dennis Miller Show", "The Drew Carey Show" as well as the prestigious "Espy Awards".
An ex-member of the Wheat Kings, Ferraro played eighteen seasons in the National Hockey League while Hull has become one of the best after dinner speakers in all of Canada.
Although ticket sales for next month's dinner have been brisk, there are still plenty of tickets remaining. To order yours call Rick Dillabough at 726-3535 or email him at rickdillabough@wheatkings.com
On the ice, the Wheat Kings failed to move back atop the WHL's Eastern Division Wednesday night when they dropped a 5-2 decision in Moose Jaw. Brandon remains one point back of the front running Regina Pats and are now just three ahead of the third place Warriors. Keith Aulie and Jay Fehr scored in a losing cause for the Wheat Kings, who outshot the Warriors 24-18.
Brandon returns home to host Swift Current and Vancouver this Friday and Saturday nights at Westman Communications Group Place. Tickets are on sale now at the Keystone box office, by calling 726-3555 or online at ticketmaster.ca.
