Wheat Kings Win in Winnipeg
December 19, 2021 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Winnipeg, MB - The Brandon Wheat Kings will head into the WHL Christmas break on a high note, after a 4-2 victory over the Winnipeg ICE on Saturday night.
Riley Ginnell scored twice and Owen Harris notched his first career game winning goal as the Wheat Kings picked up 3 of a possible 4 points on the final weekend of the pre-holiday schedule.
"We weathered the storm in the first period for sure," said Head Coach Don MacGillivray. "I didn't like how we dipped our toes in the water in the first but we got it going. We got some key kills, saves and key shifts at key times. This was a really good road game for us."
Ethan Kruger made 28 saves for his 11th win of the season, and was named the game's first star.
Despite Winnipeg having the number one powerplay in the WHL, Brandon was able to kill off all five minor penalties they took on Saturday. Over the course of two games, Brandon held the ICE to just one powerplay marker on eleven chances.
"Our guys did what they had to do tonight," added MacGillivray. "Everyone was pulling in the right direction and played hard tonight. We emptied the tanks and we got the two points we came here to get."
Brandon is now 6-2-1-0 in the month and will have some time to reset before welcoming the ICE to Brandon for the finale of this three-game set on Monday, December 27th.
"That was a big win on the road right before the break," added MacGillivray. "Our guys worked hard this weekend and we deserved it."
The Wheat Kings would like to wish a happy and safe holiday season to all the families, billets, volunteers, and most importantly the fans. We will see you in the rink after the break!
