Swift Current Broncos News Release
Edmonton, Alta. - The Swift Current Broncos (11-15-3-1) pulled even in the third period against the Edmonton Oil Kings (22-6-2-1) Saturday night, but couldn't complete the comeback, falling 3-2 in overtime.
The Broncos had a number of chances in the opening minutes with passes from behind the net coming out in front, but goaltender Alex Worthington, making his WHL debut for Edmonton, kept the Broncos at bay in the early going.
Mathew Ward would get the Broncos on the board late in the first period. While on the power play, Ward centered for Josh Filmon the slot before the puck came back to Ward in the left circle. He fired a quick shot, beating Worthington on the blocker side to put the Broncos up 1-0 after one.
Near the halfway mark of the second period the Oil Kings tied the game on a power play of their own. Carter Souch fired a shot through traffic from the right circle, beating Isaac Poulter on the glove side to tie the game.
Just 1:10 after the tying goal, Edmonton jumped ahead 2-1 as Chase Freidt-Mohr beat a screened Poulter with a shot from the blue line. The Oil Kings carried that lead into the second intermission.
The Broncos had a pair of shorthanded breakaways early in the third period, but couldn't capitalize on them to pull even.
Braeden Lewis would tie the game for the Broncos with 8:25 left in regulation, taking a pass from Josh Filmon across the slot and beating Worthington over the glove from the left circle for his first goal of the season.
The two teams went end to end in the final minute of regulation with Worthington and Poulter making saves off the rush to get the game to overtime.
After winning the opening faceoff, the Oil Kings wouldn't give up possession of the puck as it eventually came to Jalen Luypen in the right corner. Luypen cut to the net and was able to sneak a shot through Poulter to end the game, 34 seconds into overtime.
The Broncos are now off for the Christmas break until the team returns to Swift Current on December 26 ahead of their game on the 27 against the Lethbridge Hurricanes.
