The Story:
Cross Hanas and James Stefan combined for a remarkable highlight-reel "goal of the year" candidate to lead the Portland Winterhawks past the Spokane Chiefs 4-1 on Saturday.
Hanas, who has scored two lacrosse-style "Michigan" goals in a Winterhawks sweater, scooped the puck onto his stick from behind the net and tossed the puck over Spokane goaltender Mason Beaupit to James Stefan, who batted the puck out of the air and into the net for a truly incredible tally and a 4-1 Hawks lead.
The goal marked Stefan's second of the game and sealed the win for Portland as the team heads into the holiday break.
Ahead of Hanas and Stefan's late-game heroics, the Hawks built up a 2-1 advantage through two periods with second-period goals from Clay Hanus and Jaydon Dureau. Hanus struck early in the middle frame with a wrist shot from distance, while Dureau found twine just over two minutes later on the power play, collecting the puck off the face off and rifling a wrister past Beaupit's right shoulder.
Spokane's lone goal came late in the second from Copeland Fricker - his first of the year.
Dante Giannuzzi was stellar between the pipes for Portland with 21 saves on 22 shots, while Beaupit turned aside 32 of 36 for Spokane in the loss.
QUOTE OF THE NIGHT presented by BBF TECHNOLOGIES:
"It's something that's just come around in recent weeks with (Anaheim Ducks forward Trevor) Zegras doing it and so obviously as a hockey player, you see that stuff and go 'oh my gosh, that was unreal.' We were just behind the net, and their defense wasn't really pressuring me...me and (James Stefan) talked about it in the intermission because we had had another chance in the second period where we didn't pull it, but we talked about it and I had another chance in the third to do it. That's what hockey's about, you kinda take risks and see what happens. I picked it up, took the risk and Stef thankfully batted it out of the air...we got that goal together and it was pretty awesome."
