Chiefs Fall 7-2 to Division-Leading Silvertips to Close First Half
December 19, 2021 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Spokane Chiefs News Release
Everett, Wash. - The Spokane Chiefs closed out the first half of their season with a 7-2 loss on the road to the U.S. Division-leading Everett Silvertips.
Forward Chase Bertholet, one of the newest Chiefs, sniped his second goal in red and blue to the top of the net and opened the scoring at 16:06 in the first period.
This was soon followed by back-to-back Everett goals from Ryan Hofer and Alex Swetlikoff at 17:13 and 19:01 to cap the first period at 2-1, Silvertips.
The Chiefs were hot out the gate in the second period, as Spokane's own Swetlikoff fired a power play goal into the right side of the net from the circle. But this would be the last time the Chiefs found the net.
The Silvertips scored three more times throughout the second period and twice in the third, highlighted by Caden Zaplitny's first career WHL goal at 12:09 marking the seventh and final goal of the game.
Penalties proved problematic for Spokane, as three of Everett's seven goals came on the power play.
Rookie netminder Manny Panghli got the start in goal for the Chiefs and turned aside 29 of 36 shots faced, while Everett's Braden Holt denied 30 of 32 shots. The Chiefs only outshot the Silvertips in the first period, 16-11, but were ultimately outshot 36-32. Spokane went 1-for-3 on the power play and 5-for-8 on the penalty kill.
The Chiefs have a break for the next week and will return to play after the Christmas holiday when they face the Seattle Thunderbirds on the road Tuesday, December 28.
