Poor Second Period Leads to Defeat vs. Warriors
December 19, 2021 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Regina Pats News Release
Moose Jaw, Sask. - The Regina Pats were inconsistent on Saturday in Moose Jaw, falling 5-3 to the Warriors to close out their first-half schedule.
The Pats started strong, but found themselves down 1-0 after 20 minutes, and then allowed three consecutive goals in the second. Logan Nijhoff gave the Pats some life with a late second period tally that cut the deficit to 4-1, but Jagger Firkus' power play marker halfway through the third ensured there was no comeback to be had, as that goal made it a 5-2 game.
Tanner Howe found the scoresheet again in the loss, as did Parker Berge, notching his first goal of the season.
The Warriors got goals from five different players for the second consecutive night, thanks to even-strength tallies from Thomas Tien, Nathan Pilling and Robert Baco, plus power play goals from Brayden Yager and Jagger Firkus.
The Pats now begin a nine-day holiday break. They return to action at home on Monday, December 27 against the Edmonton Oil Kings.
THE GOALS
1st Period
MJ 1-0 at 12:44 - Thomas Tien (3), assisted by Cade Hayes and Braden Miller // After a point shot from Miller missed the net, Hayes centered the puck for Tien, who was all alone in front and made no mistake to open the scoring.
2nd Period
MJ 2-0 at 2:00 - Nathan Pilling (2), assisted by Atley Calvert and Majid Kaddoura // The Pats failed to clear the zone, which led to a quick counter from the Warriors. Calvert one-touched it to Pilling in the slot following the turnover, who quickly fired one past Kieper.
MJ 3-0 at 11:70 - Robert Baco (3), assisted by Eric Alarie and Ryder Korczak// Alarie picked up the puck on the left half-wall and whipped a pass in front to Baco, who one-timed it just past the outstretched pad of Kieper.
MJ 4-0 at 17:25 - Brayden Yager (14), assisted by Ryder Korczak and Denton Mateychuk (PPG) // Yager fired a one-time blast just inside the short side post after a pass from Korczak on the man advantage.
REG 1-4 at 18:13 - Logan Nijhoff (11), assisted by Borya Valis (12) // Forecheck pressure from Nijhoff caused a turnover, which led to a bad angle shot from Valis and then a crease scramble, where Nijhoff eventually was able to stuff home the loose puck.
3rd Period
RE 2-4 at 3:20 - Tanner Howe (12), assisted by Ryker Evans (24) and Logan Nijhoff (10) (PPG) // This time it was Howe's turn to score a power play goal off a one-timer, teeing it up from his usual spot at the top of the right circle to get the Pats to within a pair.
MJ 5-2 at 8:35 - Jagger Firkus (15), assisted by Brayden Yager and Ryder Korczak // Yager threaded the needle with a perfect cross-ice feed to Firkus on the power play.
REG 3-5 at 19:01 - Parker Berge (1), assisted by Tom Cadieux and Jakob Brook // Berge's point shot went off the glove and Tetachuk and then rolled past the goal line.

THEY SAID IT
Pats Assistant Coach Ken Schneider: "I thought we had a really good first period to be quite honest. We played pretty sound defensively; we didn't give up a whole bunch of chances and we outshot them quite badly. We were maybe a bit surprised by the shots on goals. Second period maybe didn't go quite as well. We gave up some goals on that power play. Their flank with Yager over there: he's such a dangerous guy. That's one that you'd like to have back, a couple of those penalties, because it's tough to defend that."
3 STARS
Brayden Yager - MJ -1G, 1A, incl. GWG
Ryder Korczak- MJ - 3A
Robert Baco - MJ - 1G
