Wheat Kings Too Much for Blades

March 3, 2016 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Saskatoon Blades News Release

BRANDON, MB - There wasn't much to say on this night except that Brandon was too big, too skilled and too good.

"We didn't have the start we wanted and it snowballed the wrong way. We're pretty embarrassed with the game it's something that you want to happen but it did and all we can do is look to the next one and put this one behind us," says Colton Waltz on the teams performance against Brandon.

Things got started pretty early for the Wheat Kings. Off the draw, Stelio Matheos's shot goes off the side of the net and the puck went right in from to John Quenneville as he backhanded it pas Hamm putting the Wheati Kings up 1-0 less than four minutes in the hockey game.

Flyers first round pick Ivan Provorov started the play out of his own zone to Nolan Patrick who busted down the right but Libor Hajek blew a tire and falls and Patrick fed it to Provorov on a 2 on 0 for the tap in putting the Wheat Kings up 2-0.

Turnovers were very costly for the Blades as they gave up 22 shots in the opening period while only generating seven shots themselves in the first period.

Tyler Coulter with a nice pass out of the corner would find Patrick who got his second point of the night and 38th goal of the year making it a 3-0 Wheat Kings score.

With less than four minutes in the first, Luke Gingras and Macoy Erkamps drop the gloves hoping the fight looked to try and spark the team some how after a very lacklustre first period.

The second period didn't look any better as Brandon continued to show dominance in the game.

Jayce Hawryluk would get his 31st and 32nd goals just only 37 seconds apart making it 5-0 Wheat Kings.

That goal would end Brock Hamm's night allowing 5 goals on 29 shots and in came Evan Smith in hopes to spark something for the Blades.

John Quenneville's pass from behind the net as Smith was grabbing his stick in the crease couldn't recover in time as Macoy Erkamps jumped in and unloaded a one timer for a 6-0 lead.

Saskatoon would get on the board however as Connor Gay would get on the board on a pass from Hebig 25 seconds after Erkamps scored.

The Wheat Kings would go to work on the power play and once again it's John Quenneville's shot from the circles beat a screened Smith for a 7-1 game.

The Wheat Kings kept adding on when Tanner Kaspick took the puck from the neutral zone and skated it in all the way to drive the net the net and tucked it away past Smith for an 8-1 game.

Former Blade Mitch Wheaton with a pass from the wall to Tyler Coulter makes it 9-1 Brandon

Nick Zajac would get the Blades on the board again on the power-play with a wrist shot on a pass from Connor Gay to make it 9-2.

It turned into the Jayce Hawryluk show very quickly as he got the hat-trick by driving the net putting it in through Smith to get the Wheat Kings into double digits.

Then he took advantage of a nice no look pass from the corner courtesy of Nolan Patrick for his fourth goal of the game to make it 11-2.

It wasn't over yet as Patrick stole the puck away from the Blades and bursts down the ice and found Hawryluk for a short handed goal for his fifth goal of the game to make it an even dozen goals for the Wheat Kings.

Tempers started to get out of had as a full out line brawl almost ensued including Evan Smith exchanging some words with Tim McGauley and even Logan Thompson at the other end of the ice.

The Wheat Kings finished with 50 shots on goal and will play the Blades next weekend in a home and home series.

Saskatoon welcomes another top team in the Lethbridge Hurricanes on Friday night at 7:00 P.M.
