Niedermayer, Soberlak to Receive Alumni Achievement Awards
March 3, 2016 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Kamloops Blazers News Release
Kamloops, BC - Kamloops Blazers alumni Scott Niedermayer and Peter Soberlak will be honoured with WHL Alumni Achievement Awards, as part of celebration for the WHL's 50th season.
Niedermayer played three seasons with the Blazers, totaling 190 points in 156 regular season games. The defenseman won a WHL Championship and a Memorial Cup with Kamloops in 1992. The NHL Hall-of-Famer Niedermayer is the only player in pro hockey history that has won every major championship. His list includes four Stanley Cups, two Olympic Gold Medals, two World Cup of Hockey Championships, a World Championship and a World Junior Championship.
Soberlak played for the Blazers and Swift Current Broncos over a four year WHL career, winning a Memorial Cup with the Broncos in 1989. Soberlak played three seasons in the AHL before going to school and earning a bachelor's degree in psychology from UBC, as well as a master's degree in sport and exercise psychology at Queen's University. He now serves as the Blazers' Mental Performance Coach and is the chair of the physical education department at Thompson River University.
Two alumni from each WHL club are honoured with these Achievement Awards, one going to a former player who has had a distinguished pro hockey career, and the other to a former player who has had a successful career through academic support received as a student athlete from the WHL Scholarship Program.
Peter Soberlak will be in attendance to receive the honor on March 4th when the Blazers host the Kelowna Rockets on CCM Propac night, while Niedermayer will not be available.
For tickets on March 4th against the Kelowna Rockets or other remaining home games, call the Kamloops Blazers Box Office at 250-838-3339, or purchase online through Ticketmaster.
