The Week That Was
---January 23rd- RAPID CITY RUSH 5,WICHTA THUNDER 4
(RC:J. Schultz-G, 4 Ast; tied Scott Wray's Rush Franchise Points Record)
In a back-and-forth tilt, the top line of Jesse Schultz (G, 4 Ast), Cody Ferriero (2 G, Ast), and Johan Ryd (2 G including GWG) accounted for a 10-point evening and all five goals, defeating the Wichita Thunder 5-4 in the beginning of their final series in Rapid City.
---January 24th- WICHITA THUNDER 4, RAPID CITY RUSH 3 F/SO-10 Rounds
(WIC: E. Meland-GWSOG in 10th Round)
After the Rush took an early 1-0 lead thanks to Mathieu Brisebois' first Rush goal on a power play, the Wichita Thunder responded with a three-goal second period. In the final act, Patrick Cullen brought the Rush within striking distance, followed by Dylan Clarke's game-tying goal with 4:38 left in regulation. The rally would give the Rush just one point in the standings, however, as they would ultimately fall in a 10-round shootout to their Central Division rivals.
Notes and Numbers
Nice Tie Man! - Jesse Schultz helped the Rush start off the weekend right; contributing 5 points in the Rush's 5-4 win over the Wichita Thunder last Friday night. His lone goal and 4 assists allowed him to tie the Rush franchise points record held by long-time captain Scott Wray, marking his 236th point while wearing a Rush uniform. With his next goal or assist, Schultz will re-write the record books and claim sole possession of the Rush's all-time scoring crown.
Marathoners - The Rush played in their seventh post-regulation game of the season, also marking their sixth decided by virtue of a shootout. With their loss to the Thunder last Saturday, the Rush are now 3-3 this season when it comes to the breakaway session, ending a three-game winning streak in shootouts. Both the longest shootouts of the season for the Rush have come against the Thunder: an 11-round win on December 21st, and last weekend's 10-round loss.
Record Watch - Four players are in position to re-write the history books in the Rush organization this season:
- Riley Weselowski - 12 games played away from Scott Wray's franchise record of 314
- Jesse Schultz - 1 point away from sole possession of Scott Wray's franchise points record
- J.P. Chabot - 6 power play goals away from Chris Lipsett's single-season franchise record of 12 power play goals in a season (a record that has held since the inaugural 2008-09 season)
- Danny Battochio - 1 shutout away from sole possession of the single-season franchise record for shutouts with 3 (he already earned a share of this record back in the 2010-11 season)
CRUNCHING NUMBERS - Last Week vs the Thunder:
- 2 - the number of shots recorded by the Rush in the second period in last Saturday's 4-3 shootout loss. The 2 shots ties the lowest shot total in a period in Rush history, a mark that was set three times prior, with the most recent occasion coming on December 17, 2011 on the road against the former CHL club in the Texas Brahmas
- 5 - the number of Rush wins when leading after 2 periods on home ice. The record translates to a perfect 5-0-0 at Premier Home Mortgage Ice in Rushmore Plaza Civic Center, with the Rush extending their winning ways in that situation against Wichita last Friday night. Overall, the Rush are 13-2-0 in that situation this season.
