January 26, 2015 - ECHL (ECHL) News Release
A nine-game unbeaten streak (8-0-1) has lifted the Kalamazoo Wings into a playoff position in the North Division. Kalamazoo is in fourth place of the division with an overall record of 18-15-3 for 39 points, one point ahead of fifth-place Wheeling.
The K-Wings began a three-game weekend on Friday with a 2-1 shootout loss at Toledo. Eric Kattelus scored the lone goal for Kalamazoo while Scott Munroe stopped 38 of 39 Walleye shots to help preserve a point.
Kalamazoo returned to its winning ways on Saturday with a 5-2 victory at Cincinnati. Matt Caria led the way with a pair of goals while Dane Fox, Sacha Guimond and Gergo Nagy each added two assists. Joel Martin turned aside 37 shots to record the win in goal.
On Sunday, the K-Wings rallied from a three-goal deficit to defeat league-leading Allen 4-3 in overtime. Trailing 3-0 midway through the second period, Caria scored shorthanded to cut the deficit to two entering the final period. Michael Neal recorded his first goal with Kalamazoo three minutes into the third period to bring the K-Wings within one and Nathan Longpre forced overtime with the equalizer with 26 seconds remaining in regulation. Zach McCullough capped the rally with his first professional goal 2:11 into the extra session to give the K-Wings the win.
Caria leads the team with 12 goals, while Fox and Curtis Valk are tied for second with 11 tallies each. Valk's 30 points are tops on Kalamazoo, and has him ranked among all ECHL rookies.
Kalamazoo's nine game unbeaten streak is the club's longest since joining the ECHL in 2009-10. The K-Wings put the streak on the line this weekend when they host Wheeling on Friday and Saturday.
