Westchester Knicks Jolted by Iowa Energy
February 21, 2016 - NBA G League (G League)
Westchester Knicks News Release
WHITE PLAINS - The Westchester Knicks (19-16), the official NBA Development League affiliate of the New York Knickerbockers, fell to the Iowa Energy (15-18) 84-80 today, splitting the weekend series at the Westchester County Center.
After an 11-2 run from Westchester to begin the game, things slowed down with both teams finding themselves in foul trouble and struggling from the perimeter. Neither team was able to hit the 20-point mark in the first quarter as the Knicks squeaked out a one-point lead after the first twelves minutes, 19-18.
The second quarter looked much like the first, neither team able to light things up. Both sides were carried by a sole player in the first half with only two players in the game scoring more than eight points. Westchester's Travis Trice II contributed 16 points in the half, while Iowa's Terry Whisnant had 13, with the Knicks holding on to a 38-35 lead after two.
No fires were lit in the locker room as the low scoring continued for both teams in the third. Each side matched 6-of-18 shots in the quarter, the Energy capitalizing on Westchester's 0-for-4 from behind the arc but giving up six points to Knicks free throws. The teams headed into the final quarter with the Knicks still up by two.
Finally warmed up by the fourth quarter, the teams managed to break 20 points each for the first time, thanks to two new stars of the quarter for each team. Westchester's Gani Lawal and Iowa's Patrick Christopher each supplied 12 points in the fourth, but it was the Energy who prevailed at the end to win 84-80.
Gani Lawal recorded a new career-high 25 points along with a career and team season-high 17 rebounds for a double-double. Travis Trice II finished with 23 points, six assists, four rebounds, and two steals. Darion Atkins grabbed 10 boards, scoring eight points and knocking down three blocks.
Terry Whisnant paced Iowa with 22 points, seven assists, and four steals. Patrick Christopher finished with 19 points, three assists, and two steals, while Andrew Harrison rounded out the double-digit scoring with 15 points, four rebounds, three assists, and two steals.
The Westchester Knicks hit the road for two games beginning with a 7:00 p.m. match-up against the Fort Wayne Mad Ants, the Indiana Pacers' affiliate, on Thursday, Feb. 25. The game will be broadcast live on MSG 2 and on the NBA Development League's YouTube channel.
