Westchester Knicks End Regular Season with Loss
April 2, 2016 - NBA G League (G League)
Westchester Knicks News Release
WHITE PLAINS - The Westchester Knicks (28-22), the official NBA Development League affiliate of the New York Knickerbockers, finished the regular season with a loss to the Maine Red Claws (31-19), the Boston Celtics' affiliate, the final score 107-95.
The Knicks put on a show for the crowd in White Plains, with eight of the home team's 28 points in the first coming from an array of Westchester slam dunks. The Red Claws stayed steady though, shooting over 60 percent and running up as much as an 11-point lead late in the quarter. Despite 11 points from White Plains native Ra'Shad James, the Knicks trailed by 10 after a 38 point quarter from Maine.
The Red Claws slowed down in the second, but Westchester struggled to overcome the deficit from the previous twelve minutes. The Knicks were able to come within seven, but a 9-2 run thereafter from Maine saw the home team down by 14. Westchester's second quarter savior was found in Kevin Capers, who had 12 of the team's 23 points in the quarter, but Maine continued to hold the lead, 60-51 at the half.
Westchester held Maine to another 22 point quarter, using a burst of runs to tighten the Red Claws' lead. But each of the three times the Knicks would pull within one possession, the Red Claws would answer with a three. Sixteen third quarter points in the paint helped Westchester cut the deficit to three heading into the final quarter.
The Knicks were unable to capitalize in the fourth quarter, posting a dismal 16 points shooting just 32 percent. Continuing a successful run in the paint, Maine saw 14 of their 25 fourth quarter points within, and held on to capture the teams' regular season finales 107-95.
In his first start for Westchester, Ra'Shad James finished with a new season-high 27 points to go with three rebounds and two steals. Kevin Capers came off the bench to tie his season-high 24 points, with six rebounds and two assists. Thanasis Antetokounmpo had a stellar game, recording a double-double of a career-high 19 rebounds and 17 points, adding three blocks and two assists.
James Young paced the Red Claws with 19 points, adding eight rebounds and three assists. Marcus Thompson followed with 18 points, while Coron Williams and Levi Randolph came off the bench to supply 12 and 11 points respectively.
