Charleston, WV - The West Virginia Power, the South Atlantic League affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates, will hold a food drive from June 5 through June 11 at Appalachian Power Park to benefit the Mountaineer Food Bank in Gassaway, WV. The Power are participating in the "Strike Out Hunger" campaign laid out by the Delmarva Shorebirds, hosts of the 2011 South Atlantic League All-Star Game.

The game will be played at Arthur W. Purdue Stadium in June 21, 2011. The ballpark is named for the founder of Perdue chicken farms, and the poultry company is sponsoring the game and the "Step Up to the Plate" All-Star Challenge. "Step Up to the Plate" challenges each of the 14 SAL teams to partner with their respective Feeding America affiliate community food bank to involve their communities in the fight against hunger.

Perdue is offering each SAL team community a $1,000 challenge grant, funded through the Arthur W. Perdue Foundation. The money will be awarded to each participating food bank that raises, in cooperation with its SAL team, the equivalent of 5,000 meals by June 12.

The Power will accept donations at the box office at the Morris St. gate at Appalachian Power Park all week during regular business hours, during each home game at the fan assistance center, and will hold a four-hour donation drive through on Saturday, June 11 from 10 am through 2 pm in the suite lot along Lewis St.

Every individual who makes a donation of five canned goods or non-perishable food items will receive a free ticket to the West Virginia Power game on June 18. Cash donations will also be accepted, with every donation of five dollars or more receiving a free ticket. The team is celebrating WVU Mountaineer Night that day, and will have special appearances in the park from former WVU stars Major Harris, Joe Mazulla, Owen Schmidt, and John Flowers.

In 1981, Mountaineer Food Bank was created through the efforts of an anti-hunger coalition looking for ways to feed more people. They began creating relationships throughout the state, and started the rural food delivery system in the Feeding America network.

Today, Mountaineer Food Bank is the state's largest supplier of food and personal products for people in need of emergency assistance. Through a sophisticated network of feeding programs and donors, Mountaineer Food Bank now serves over 500 programs in 48 counties in West Virginia.
