Salisbury, Md. - The Delmarva Shorebirds (31-26) used back-to-back home runs by Mike Flacco and Kieron Pope to defeat the West Virginia Power (27-28) 5-3 at Appalachian Power Park on Sunday afternoon. It was the first time this season that the Shorebirds hit back-to-back home runs.

Manny Machado played in his first game since injuring his left knee on May 5. He went 1-for-4 with a bunt single in the fourth inning.

The Shorebirds jumped to an early lead in the fourth inning. Mychal Givens was hit by a pitch and Machado placed a perfect bunt single to set the table. Then, an error by third baseman Eric Avila loaded the bases with nobody out. Michael Ohlman drew a bases loaded walk and then Adam Gaylord hit a sacrifice fly to center field to give the ‘Birds a 2-0 edge.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Power scored two runs to knot the game. Dan Grovatt was hit by a Tim Berry pitch and Justin Howard walked to open the inning. After a groundout by Chase Lyles moved the runners up, Kawika Emsley-Pai hit a grounder to first to score Grovatt. Elias Diaz followed with an RBI single to tie the game.

The Shorebirds took control in the sixth inning. Mike Flacco hit a towering home run inside the left field foul pole to give the Shorebirds a 3-2 lead. The next batter, Kieron Pope, hit a line drive homer over the field wall to give the ‘Birds a 4-2 lead. It was Pope's first home run since April 16. Later in the inning, Adam Gaylord hit a double. Then, Dudley Leonora hit a fly ball near the right field line that was dropped by Justin Howard, allowing the ‘Birds to build a 5-2 lead.

The West Virginia Power inched within two runs in the sixth. Diaz hit a one out double and scored on a passed ball charged to Michael Ohlman.

Tim Adleman picked up his fourth win of the season in two innings of relief. He stranded the bases loaded in the fifth inning by striking out the final two hitters. Randy Henry tossed two scoreless innings and David Walters earned his league leading 16th save by throwing a perfect ninth inning.

Shorebirds starter Tim Berry lasted four innings and allowed just one hit.

The Shorebirds and Power play game two of the series on Monday night at 7:05 p.m. RHP Luis Noel is the scheduled starter for the Shorebirds.
