Charleston Dirty Birds News Release

The West Virginia Power lost 5-3 on Sunday afternoon to the Delmarva Shorebirds at Appalachian Power Park. Delmarva scored three in the sixth to break a 2-2 tie, including two on back-to-back home runs.

The Shorebirds cracked the scoreboard against Colton Cain in the fourth inning. Cain retired nine of the first ten and only allowed a double over the first three innings before Delmarva loaded the bases on a hit batter, single, and error to start the fourth. With one out, Cain walked in a run and surrendered a sac fly to give the visitors a 2-0 lead.

In the bottom of the fourth, West Virginia put the first two batters on, and both would score to tie the game. Dan Grovatt scored on a ground out by Kawika Emsley-Pai, and Justin Howard crossed on an Elias Diaz single.

In the sixth, Michael Flacco and Kieron Pope hit back-to-back home runs off Cain to build a 4-2 lead. Adam Gaylord doubled and scored when Dudley Leonora reached on an error to cap the Shorebirds scoring.

The Power got a run back in the bottom of the sixth when Diaz doubled, moved to third on a ground out, and touched home on a wild pitch. West Virginia managed a base runner in the seventh and two in the eighth, but could not generate any more offense.

Cain (4-5) took the loss, while Delmarva reliever Tim Adleman (4-3) earned the win. David Walters pitched a perfect ninth for his 16th save of the season. Diaz collected three of the four Power hits, including his first triple of the season in the eighth.

West Virginia and Delmarva continue this series on Monday evening at Appalachian Power Park. Zack Von Rosenberg gets the start for the Power against the Shorebirds Luis Noel at 7:05 pm.

POWER RECORD: 27-28
