Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
KANNAPOLIS, N.C. (June 5, 2011) -- The Kannapolis Intimidators matched a season-high with 16 runs in a rout of the Rome Braves, 16-4, on Sunday evening at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium. LF Brady Shoemaker paced Kannapolis going 3-for-5 with two home runs and three RBI, while 3B Juan Silverio and C Miguel Gonzalez each drove in four runs, and Silverio finished a homer shy of the cycle.
The Intimidators struck early for five runs in the first inning, all coming with two outs. With the bases loaded, Silverio legged out an infield single, and CF Trayce Thompson never stopped running from second base, giving Kannapolis two runs on the play. One batter later, with runners on first and second base, Gonzalez in his first at bat with Kannapolis this season homered (1) to left field to give the Intimidators a 5-0 lead in the first inning.
Kannapolis tacked on a run in the second inning when SS Kyle Eveland stole third and came home on an errant throw from pitcher David Filak, making it 6-0 Kannapolis. Silverio tripled in the third inning and scored on a Gonzalez groundout. Filak (2-5) took the loss for Rome.
1B Dan Black and Silverio added two-run doubles in the fourth inning, stretching the Intimidators lead to 11-0. Shoemaker added a home run (7) to lead off the bottom of the sixth inning, making it 12-1.
Starting pitcher Steven Upchurch (2-4) allowed a run on four hits in five innings of work, striking out six batters while walking three in a winning effort. Nick McCully faced the minimum three batters in the sixth before surrendering three runs in the seventh inning. Reid Kelly pitched a scoreless eighth and ninth for the Intimidators.
Kannapolis added to the lead on 2B Ross Wilson's two-run double and Shoemaker's second homer (8) of the game in the bottom of the seventh, making it 16-4.
The Intimidators and Braves continue the three-game series on Monday morning with a 10:05 a.m start time.
