Sanford Stifles 'Dogs as GreenJackets Grab 4-2 Win
June 5, 2011 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Charleston RiverDogs News Release
AUGUSTA, Ga. - Shawn Sanford authored 7.0 brilliant innings, and the Augusta offense broke a seventh inning tie with a three-run rally, as the GreenJackets defeated the Charleston RiverDogs, 4-2, in South Atlantic League action Sunday night in front of 1,247 fans at Lake Olmstead Stadium.
Augusta moved to 24-33 and into sole possession of fifth place in the Southern Division standings with the win, while Charleston dropped to 23-34 in defeat.
Slade Heathcott returned to the RiverDogs lineup with a bang after sitting out the last three games. Heathcott blasted a Sanford (3-4) offering over the right field fence for his fourth home run of the season, giving Charleston a 1-0 lead one batter into the game. It was the second leadoff jack of the campaign for the 2009 first round selection.
Charleston starter Nik Turley was excellent over 5.0 scoreless innings of work, retiring nine in a row during one stretch. The 6-6 southpaw allowed just two doubles, did not walk a single batter, and matched a season-high with seven strikeouts.
Kramer Sneed (3-5) relieved his fellow left-hander and quickly collected two outs, but could not secure the third before the GreenJackets knotted the score. Ehire Adrianza walked, and came in to score on Adam Duvall's opposite field triple beyond the reach of Kelvin De Leon in right.
Sanford mowed down Charleston in order in the top of the seventh, allowing the Augusta offense to go right back to work and forge a 4-1 lead in the last of the frame.
Chris Lofton delivered a RBI double to give the GreenJackets their first lead, and Adrianza upped the advantage to three with a two-run double to center field.
The leadoff home run from Heathcott was just about all Charleston could muster against Sanford, who allowed just one run against the RiverDogs in a no-decision on May 21. Sanford yielded three hits and a walk, while fanning four.
Following seven consecutive scoreless innings, the Charleston offense showed some life against Augusta closer Stephen Harrold in the ninth. Harrold issued two straight one-out walks, and De Leon singled home a run with a line drive to right-center field. The RiverDogs then had two cracks with the tying runs on base, but Harrold retired Jose Mojica and Eduardo Sosa to garner his eighth save.
The RiverDogs and GreenJackets meet for the middle contest of this three-game series on Monday at 7:05 pm. Right-hander Jose. A Ramirez (2-2, 5.33 ERA) is tabbed to take the ball for Charleston, versus fellow righty Justin Schumer (2-2, 7.12 ERA) of Augusta.
