Charleston Dirty Birds News Release

The Power continue their four-game series against the Columbia Fireflies tonight at Spirit Communications Park, with first pitch set for 7:05 p.m. LHP Domingo Robles (3-3, 3.15 ERA) is on the mound and below.

-----------

MITCHELL'S DOUBLE JOLTS POWER TO 3-2 WIN: With the game tied at two in the eleventh inning, Calvin Mitchell stroked a leadoff double to left-center against Columbia reliever Taylor Henry, scoring Chris Sharpe, who was the placed-on-runner at second base. In the bottom of the inning, Blake Weiman continued his dominant evening, working around a one-out single to Ali Sanchez by striking out Scott Manea to end the ballgame and give the Power a 3-2 win on Monday evening at Spirit Communications Park. Weiman worked a career-high four innings to earn his first win of 2018, ultimately stranding four baserunners in the two extra frames and fanning four Fireflies hitters. In the win, Max Kranick dazzled in his South Atlantic League debut, spinning five innings and allowing just two hits while walking one. He faced 19 total batters through five innings, four above the minimum.

MULTI-HIT MITCHELL: Mitchell's 2-for-4 showing Monday marked his 11th multi-hit game of the season. The Pirates' 15th-best prospect per MLB.com is one of two Power batters with double digit multi-hit efforts in 2018 (Oneil Cruz, 10). Mitchell has hit safely in nine of his last 11 games, and in 12 of his 17 May contests, although his May average sits at .231, 133 points below his torrid .364 April clip.

WONDERFUL WEIMAN: Weiman has been one of the most dominant relievers in West Virgnia's bullpen this year. The Power southpaw now has a 1.38 ERA through 13 appearances in 2018, striking out 33 batters to just two walks over 26 innings. Weiman has converted three of his four save opportunities and held batters to a .226 clip against him. His 1.38 ERA is second-lowest among all West Virginia relievers, with only Beau Sulser holding a lower earned run average at 1.26.

ONE RUN FUN: Following Monday's 3-2 win over Columbia, the Power are 9-5 in one-run games in 2018, posting a .643 winning percentage that trails just Greensboro (.667) for the highest mark in the league. In games decided by two runs or less, West Virginia is 15-9 (.625), second-best among South Atlantic League teams to Greensboro (.636).

EXTRA, EXTRA, READ ALL ABOUT IT: With their 11-inning triumph Monday, West Virginia moved to 4-2 in extra-inning ballgames in 2018. The Power have the highest winning percentage in extra-inning affairs in the SAL of teams that have played more than five extra-inning contests. Of those five teams, only Columbia and Lakewood have had more extra-inning games (8) than West Virginia, with both clubs holding a 5-3 record in those tilts.

GETTING STRANDED: In Monday's series opener against Columbia, the Power were 2-for-13 (.154) with runners in scoring position and stranded eight runners on base. Over their last five games, West Virginia has gone 7-for-54 (.130) with runners in scoring position, lowering their season average to .225. That mark is the second-lowest in the South Atlantic League, ahead of only the Charleston RiverDogs, who hold a .210 season average with RISP.

ROLLING ROBLES: Tuesday starter Domingo Robles has been outstanding in the month of May for the Power, spinning three quality starts in as many outings. Since his April 29 scuffle against Lexington, the Dominican native is 2-1 with a 2.37 ERA over 19 innings pitched, during which he has struck out 12 batters and walked just four. Robles now has four quality starts on the season, the most of any West Virginia starter in 2018. His 3.15 season ERA is eighth-lowest among all Pirates farmhands. The southpaw will make his first career start against Columbia on Tuesday evening.

THE PLAYOFF RACE: With their 3-2 win Monday, the Power closed the gap in the South Atlantic League Northern Division Standings between themselves, Kannapolis and Delmarva. Hickory walked it off against the Shorebirds in 10 innings yesterday, while Greensboro edged out the Intimidators, 5-3. West Virginia has yet to play either Kannapolis or Delmarva in 2018, but will meet both teams before the first half concludes. The Power and the Intimidators clash in a four-game series at Appalachian Power Park from May 25-28, while West Virginia and Delmarva close out the first half in Charleston with a three-game series from June 15-17.

POWER POINTS: The Power did not make an error in a game for the eighth time in 2018, improving to 6-2 in those contests... West Virginia is 4-1 in games where both teams accumulate the same number of hits.

ON THE AIR: West Virginia Power games can be heard on The Jock 1300 & 1340 AM in the Kanawha Valley, online at wvpower.com and on the TuneIn Radio App. David Kahn and John Kocsis will handle play-by-play duties in 2018.
