Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
HICKORY, NC - For just the second time this season, the Delmarva Shorebirds lost their third game in a row, falling 5-1 to the Hickory Crawdads on Tuesday night at LP Frans Stadium.
Tyree Thompson (2-3) earned the win for the Crawdads (16-24), allowing one run on three hits in 7.1 innings while walking two and striking out three. DL Hall (0-2) took the loss for the Shorebirds (26-17), surrendering three runs on five hits in four innings. Alex Speas nailed down a five-out save for Hickory, his fourth of the year.
Hickory opened proceedings in the bottom of the second when back-to-back doubles from Austin O'Banion and Sam Huff produced a run. In the fourth, Huff was in the middle of things again, lacing a two-out double down the right field line. Kole Enright then cranked a line drive two-run homer to left to put the Crawdads up 3-0.
In the Crawdad half of the seventh, Franklin Rollin legged out an infield single and took third on a stolen base and error. Tyreque Reed eventually doubled him home with two outs to make it 4-0.
Delmarva had little answer against Thompson, who needed just 65 pitches to get through seven scoreless innings. With one out in the eighth, Jaylen Ferguson worked a seven-pitch at-bat and cracked a solo home run down the left field line. Ferguson's first Shorebird hit got his team back within 4-1.
Kirvin Moesquit then drew a walk off Ferguson, and the Crawdads went to Speas from there, and the Hickory fireballer got Branden Becker to fly out and struck out Zach Jarrett to avoid additional trouble.
The Crawdads got that run back in the bottom of the eighth when Justin Jacobs drew a two-out bases-loaded walk.
Moesquit and Trevor Craport each had a single, the only other Shorebird hits besides Ferguson's home run.
Huff paced the Crawdad attack, going 3-for-3 with two doubles, two runs, and an RBI.
Delmarva has now dropped five of its last six. The only other time the Shorebirds lost three in a row came on April 22-24, one to Lakewood and two to Kannapolis.
The Shorebirds will look to avoid their longest skid of the season on Wednesday night against the Crawdads. Zac Lowther (2-1, 1.44) gets his latest look at Hickory against Alex Eubanks (3-3, 6.95). First pitch is set for 6:00 p.m., and pregame coverage on Fox Sports 960 AM and the MiLB First Pitch App begins at 5:45 with Will DeBoer on the call.
