Hickory Crawdads News Release
Hickory, NC - The Crawdads slugged five extra base hits, including four doubles, as they defeated the Delmarva Shorebirds 5-1 on Tuesday night. With the walkoff victory last night, the 'Dads currently lead the series 2-0 and are on a three game winning streak against the Shorebirds.
Back-to-back doubles to lead off the inning by 'Dads left fielder Austin O'Banion and designated hitter Sam Huff gave the 'Dads a 1-0 lead in the second.
The 'Dads bats kept the momentum going in the fourth, scoring two more runs. Huff got the rally going with a two out double to right. Second baseman Kole Enright homered to left to give the 'Dads a three-run lead.
In the bottom of the seventh, centerfielder Franklin Rollin beat out a single to short. Rollin stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error. First baseman Tyreque Reed hit the 'Dads fourth double of the night to increase the Crawdads lead to four runs.
Crawdads starter Tyree Thompson was dominant over the Shorebirds, completing 7 1/3 shutout innings before yielding a solo homerun. Thompson exited after walking the next batter but finished the evening with 3 hits allowed and two walks issued. Alex Speas took over for Thompson, recording the final two outs of the inning on a fly ball and a strike out.
The 'Dads recorded two walks and a single in the bottom of the eighth to load the bases for right fielder Justin Jacobs. Jacobs got a walk of his own to bring in a run and push the Crawdads lead back to 4 runs.
Speas retired the side in order in the bottom of the ninth, striking out the final batter of the game in an at bat that included a 100-mph pitch. Speas earned the save, his fourth of the season.
Right hander Alex Eubanks (3-3, 6.95) will take the hill tomorrow at 6pm for the 'Dads in game three against the Shorebirds' lefty Zac Lowther (2-1, 1.44 ERA).
