Lexington Legends News Release
(CHARLESTON, W. Va.) The Lexington Legends held an early three-run lead, but West Virginia exploded for five runs in the sixth inning and four in the seventh on their way to a 9-4 win over the Legends Thursday night. Taylor Lewis had a single, a triple and a two-run homer for West Virginia.
The Legends took a 1-0 lead on a solo homer by Brandon Meredith in the second inning.
Lexington added two runs in the fourth. Meredith walked with one out, went to third on a single by Jay Austin, who took second on a throw to the plate. Roberto Pena's double to left field scored both runners to give the Legends a 3-0 lead.
Legends starter Luis Cruz held the Power scoreless on one hit through the first five innings, but the West Virginia bats came alive in the sixth. Francisco Diaz led off with a single, and took second on an error by right fielder Mike Kvasnicka. A wild pitch by Cruz allowed Diaz to advance to third, from where he scored on a single by Eric Avila. After Avila was forced at second on a grounder to shortstop, Alen Hanson singled, sending Aponte to second. Both runners scored on a triple to center field by Lewis, tying the game at 3-3. Lewis scored the go-ahead run on a single by Greg Polanco. Euris Quezada relieved Cruz, and Polanco stole second, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on a passed ball charged to catcher Roberto Pena, giving the Power a 5-3 lead.
Avila and Lewis each hit two-run homers in the seventh inning to close out the West Virginia scoring.
The Legends scored a run in the ninth on a single by Jordan Scott, a passed ball, and a single by Matt Duffy.
West Virginia starter Zack Dodson (2-5) worked the first six innings and picked up the win. Cruz (5-4) took the loss.
The two teams will meet in game two of the four-game series Friday night at Appalachian Power Park. Game time is 7:05 p.m.
