CHARLESTON, SC - Those close to the Charleston RiverDogs have known for years that veteran staffer Melissa McCants Azevedo was special.

Now a local publication confirms what those of us already knew.

The Charleston Regional Business Journal has named the RiverDogs' special event coordinator a finalist for their "Influential Women in Business Award" in the category of "Rising Star" where she is one of three up for the citation.

The winners in each category will be named at a luncheon event on July 12 at the Daniel Island Club.

"Just to be included is indeed quite an honor, and I'm humbled by it," said Azevedo, who coordinates all special events for the RiverDogs at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park. "I simply try to do my job to the best of my ability."

Among her many responsibilities with the club are serving as the events coordinator for next week's 53rd Annual South Atlantic League All-Star Game that the RiverDogs are hosting. She also manages the club's events that range from RiverDogs'-themed golf outings to beer festivals and from summer baseball camps to competitive running events.

"Melissa is one of the most detailed-oriented people I've ever met and she clearly gets things done," said RiverDogs General Manager Dave Echols. "We are proud of Melissa and are equally happy that her work is being recognized outside of Riley Park."

A 1996 graduate of the College of Charleston who was recognized in 2004 with the College's Department of Communications' Distinguished Alumni Award, McCants previously spent three seasons (1996-98) with the RiverDogs as the director of community relations. As a teen, she worked as a part-time, game-day staff with operations, promotions, guest services and groups and picnics.

From 1998-04, McCants served as the College of Charleston's director of sports marketing and later worked as business manager for McCants Dental Art, Inc. As a student at the College of Charleston, she was a media relations assistant for three years.
