Hickory Crawdads News Release
HICKORY, NC - The Hickory Crawdads opened the second half of the season with a 6-3 win against the Greensboro Grasshoppers, before 3,164 fans at L.P. Frans Stadium on Thursday night.
The Grasshoppers (0-1, 46-25) opened the scoring in the top of the first inning. LF John Schultz led off the game with a single and scored on a two-run home run from 2B Austin Barnes that put Greensboro ahead 2-0. Hickory RHP Nick Martinez (W, 3-2) rebounded well after the long-ball, retiring the next nine batters in order and allowing just the two runs through six innings in the start.
Hickory (1-0, 37-33) collected it's first fun in the bottom of the second inning. C Jorge Alfaro led off the frame with a triple belted the opposite way into the right-center field gap. Greensboro RHP Jose Urena (L, 5-4) retired the next two batters in a row, but LF Trever Adams came through with an RBI double to bring in Alfaro and slice the deficit in half, 2-1.
The Crawdads erased the 'Hoppers lead and shot ahead in the bottom of the fourth inning. Alfaro led off the inning with a single into left field, before he then advanced to third on a double into the left field corner by DH Kevin Torres. CF Jordan Akins followed with an RBI ground out that scored Alfaro from third, tying the score, 2-2. Hickory took the lead shortly after on another RBI double from Adams, as he blasted a ball into left-center field to plate Torres. One out later, Adams came around to score on an RBI double by 2B Rougned Odor that gave the 'Dads a 4-2 advantage.
Facing LHP Andrew Faulkner, the 'Hoppers cut the lead in the top of the seventh after loading the bases with two infield singles and a walk. C Wilfredo Gimenez singled in a run to shrink the Hickory lead to 4-3, but then RHP Arlett Mavare took over on the mound and induced an inning-ending double play with no further damage being done.
The Crawdads added insurance runs in the seventh and eighth innings. 3B Hanser Alberto, who entered the game as a defensive replacement in the sixth, led off the seventh by being hit by a pitch. Alberto advanced to third after a bunt single by SS Luis Sardinas and a fielder's choice by 2B Drew Robinson, and then scored on an RBI ground out by RF Jeremy Williams, making the score 5-3. Hickory collected it's final run in the eighth inning. Torres led off with a double and scored on a two-base fielding error, putting the 'Dads ahead, 6-3.
Mavare navigated through a scoreless eighth inning as well, before RHP Phil Klein (S, 4) dealt a scoreless ninth to close the 6-3 win for the Crawdads.
