Braves Use Hot Start to Cool Tourists; 7-3

June 21, 2012 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Asheville Tourists News Release

The Rome Braves received a few new players during the All-Star break and they came out slugging Thursday night in Asheville. The visitors jumped out to a 6-0 lead, and held on to beat the Tourists 7-3. Greg Ross earned his first win of the season while Ben Alsup suffered only his third defeat.

One of the game stories was two-out hitting. Rome tallied a total of 12 hits in the contest; nine of them came with two outs on the scoreboard. In the first, the Braves tallied four straight two-out base knocks to take an early 3-0 lead.

The second inning provided another two-out RBI single, this time off the bat of Ross Heffley. The Western Carolina product appeared in his first professional game and finished 2-for-5.

In the fourth, Rome struck for two more. Tony Mueller legged out a fielder's choice and Heffley delivered with a second RBI single; however, Asheville did answer in the bottom of the fourth.

The Tourists picked up their first run when Riggins doubled home Sam Mende, but Riggins had to leave the game shortly after with an injury. Taylor Featherston also contributed an RBI single and later scored on a Braves error.

Asheville could not pull any closer the rest of the way and Rome tacked on an insurance run in the seventh.

The Braves did an excellent job of quieting the Tourists Thirsty Thursday "TM" crowd, which happened to be McCormick Field's biggest crowd of the year. The two teams are back at it tomorrow night for Game Two.
