CHARLESTON, S.C. - West Virginia's late-inning heroics were not enough, as they fell 4-3 in 10 innings in the series opener against the Charleston RiverDogs Friday evening at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.
West Virginia (33-31, 70-60) scored the go-ahead run when Jesse Medrano, the first batter in the 10th, laced a single off Carlos Espinal (1-2) to left field that plated Chris Sharpe to give the Power a 3-2 lead.
The RiverDogs marched right back in the bottom half of the frame, scoring two to walk it off. After a pop out bunt in foul territory to start the inning, Cam Alldred (0-1) allowed three straight singles from Carlos Vidal, Oswaldo Cabrera and Dermis Garcia, with the final hit scoring Vidal to hand Charleston the walk-off win.
With two outs in the top of the seventh inning, Medrano blooped a single into left to score Rodolfo Castro and Raul Hernandez, the latter of whom had lined a ground-rule double to center earlier in the frame. Medrano's two-run knock tied the game at two.
Hunter Stratton spun another quality start. The righty stranded six runners on the base paths in as many innings while allowing two runs and fanning three batters.
Ryan Valdes was crucial in extending the game for the Power. He shut down the RiverDogs (62-71, 29-36), hurling three scoreless innings and wringing up five batters while allowing just one hit.
West Virginia continues its four-game series against the RiverDogs at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park Saturday night, with first pitch set for 6:05 p.m. LHP Ike Schlabach (7-4, 3.81 ERA) toes the rubber for the Power, while the RiverDogs counter with righty Nolan Martinez (0-3, 5.49 ERA). Pregame coverage begins at 5:45 p.m. on The Jock 1300 and 1340 AM, as well as online at www.wvpower.com and via the TuneIn Radio App and MiLB First Pitch App.
The Power is in a playoff push. Should they make the playoffs, Appalachian Power Park would host game one of the Northern Division Championship Series on Wednesday, September 5, at 7:05 p.m. For tickets and more information, call the Power at 304-344-2287 or visit wvpower.com.
