A seven-run eighth inning blew the game open, and the West Virginia Power completed a three-game sweep of the Lexington Legends with a 12-4 win in front of 5,458 fans at Whitaker Bank Ballpark.
The Power scored two runs in the first inning. Logan Ratledge led off the game with a double and moved to third on a passed ball. Mitchell Tolman walked and Daniel Arribas was hit by pitch, loading the bases. A single by Carlos Munoz brought home one run, and a second run scored when Tyler Filliben was hit by a pitch.
The Legends came back with a run in the bottom of the first on a walk to D.J. Burt and a double by Anderson Miller, but the Power answered with two more runs in the top of the second. Alfredo Reyes drew a leadoff walk, moved to second on a ground out and scored on Tolman's single. Tolman advanced to second on a walk to Arribas, and then scored on a single by Munoz, putting the Power in front 4-1.
West Virginia added a run in the third for a 5-1 lead.
Miller led off the bottom of the fourth with a single, moved to third on a single by Michael Hill and scored on a wild pitch.
Lexington's Samir Duenez started the sixth with a double. He moved to third on Miller's sacrifice bunt and scored on a sacrifice fly by Amalani Fukofuka, leaving the Legends down 5-3.
It was still 5-3 going into the eighth, when the Power wrapped it up with seven runs on three hits and five walks. Reyes drove in two runs with a double.
West Virginia starter Mitch Keller (5-4) picked up the win. He pitched the first five innings and allowed four hits and two runs. He struck out seven batters and walked one.
Legends starter Julio Pinto, who left the game in the second inning after being hit by a line drive, took the loss. He allowed three hits and four runs.
The Legends will finish the first half of the season with a four-game series in Augusta. The opener is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Thursday.
Vallot update: Catcher Chase Vallot was hit in the face by a pitch during his third-inning at bat last night, and will have to undergo oral surgery. It's not known how long he will be out of action, but he will not play in the South Atlantic League All-Star game June 21 at Whitaker Bank Ballpark.
