
Tying Run Thrown out at the Plate, Charleston Falls 3-2

CHARLESTON, SC - The Charleston RiverDogs had the tying run on second base with two outs in the ninth, but came up short as Nathan Mikolas was thrown out at home to end the game. The RiverDogs fell to the Augusta GreenJackets 3-2 Wednesday night in front of 2,826 at Joseph P. Riley Jr., Park Tuesday night.
Charleston entered the bottom of the ninth inning down by two runs, trailing 3-1. The RiverDogs (39-26) presented the tying run in the ninth, but came up just short as Nathan Mikolas was thrown out at home to end the game.
Audie Afenir and Mikolas began the inning with back-to-back singles and moved up 90 feet each on a wild pitch issued by Heath Slatton. As runners were on second and third and nobody out, Slatton was able to quickly pick up two outs. With the tying run on second base Gouske Katoh dug into the left-handed batters box. Katoh lined one to center field, which scored Afenir easily and RiverDog manager Luis Durante waved Mikolas home. Augusta's center fielder Seth Harrison came up firing and threw a perfect strike to the plate, throwing out Mikolas to end the game.
Augusta tacked on the much-needed insurance run in the ninth inning coming off an RBI single from Lucius Fox. With two outs Richard Amion go on base with a single and moved to second on a wild pitch, Fox then shot a groundball into left scoring Amion to put Augusta up 3-1.
The GreenJackets snuck another run across in the fifth taking the 2-1 lead. Shawon Dunston Jr. led the inning off with a single to right. With Amion at the plate, Dunston then stole second and was able to advance to third as the throw trickled into center field. After an Amion groundout, Fox reached on a walk. Following a fly out, Augusta sent both runners for the successful double-steal, as Dunston was able to score on the play.
Charleston got back squared in the bottom of the first with a run of their own. Hoy Jun Park got on base with a single to center. With one out, Park stole second and third. While taking third, Augusta's catcher, Matt Winn's throw cruised into left field allowing Park to score.
Augusta struck in the first inning for a run as Seth Harrison got it going with a one out triple to right field. Third baseman Miguel Gomez then drove in Harrison with an RBI double to right to put the GreenJackets up 1-0.
Ballpark Fun
RiverDogs and the Greater Charleston Restaurant Association helped recognize individuals in the local service industry. The RiverDogs celebrated Irish Night as Irish dancers showcased their moves on the field between innings along with hurlers who impressed with their throwing power. It was also Senior Wednesday as seniors who enter the stadium before 7pm received a free hot dog, chips and a drink.

The RiverDogs will make the trek up to the other Charleston in the league, traveling to West Virginia to face the Power in a four game series to wrap up the first half of the season. The RiverDogs will throw out RHP Luis Cedeno (3-2, 2.51) vs RHP Dario Agrazal (3-5, 4.58) in game one of the series, Thursday, June 16th.
