Jersey Shore BlueClaws News Release
LAKEWOOD, NJ - A late BlueClaws rally fell short on Thursday night as Deivi Grullon grounded into a game-ending double play as Hagerstown topped the BlueClaws 6-5 on Wednesday night at FirstEnergy Park.
Grenny Cumana started the ninth with a home run off Trey Lambert to pull Lakewood within one, but after a strikeout and a single, Grullon grounded into a game-ending 5-4-3 double play as Lakewood was unable to complete the comeback and sweep of Hagerstown.
Lakewood fell to 26-39 and saw their five-game home winning streak snapped while Hagerstown improved to 41-25 on the season.
Trey Lambert, who allowed the Cumana home run, earned his first save.
The BlueClaws jumped out to a quick first-inning lead on an RBI single by Deivi Grullon to put Lakewood up 1-0 off Jefry Rodriguez. The inning started on an 11-pitch at bat by Grenny Cumana, who grounded out, and a 10-pitch at bat by Jiandido Tromp, who singled and scored.
In the third, Damek Tomscha grounded into a double play that scored Cumana and put the BlueClaws up 2-0.
The Suns, however, would respond with three runs in the fourth inning, all with two outs. An RBI double by Edwin Lora opened the scoring, and Telmito Agustin followed with an RBI double and Victor Robles with an RBI single.
Lakewood starter Franklyn Kilome came out after four innings, allowing three runs, all earned, with three walks and four strikeouts. Hagerstown added runs off relievers Skylar Hunter and Sutter McLouhlin and led 5-2.
Then in the seventh, the BlueClaws got two runs back on a two-out single by Damek Tomscha before the Suns added another in the eighth for a 6-4 lead.
Rodriguez (6-2) earned the win, allowing four runs in 6.2 innings of work.
Cumana, Tromp, and Tomscha all had two hits for the BlueClaws.
The BlueClaws open a four-game series with Kannapolis on Thursday night. Drew Anderson (1-1) starts for Lakewood against RHP Brandon Easterling (3-1).
