Clinton LumberKings News Release
Davenport, IA - Nick Wells struck out a professional career high nine batters on Tuesday night at Modern Woodmen Park but the Clinton LumberKings feel in shutout fashion to the Quad Cities River Bandits, 4-0. The loss marked the first time this season that Clinton (37-28) was shutout in a nine-inning game.
The LumberKings had few chances against the River Bandits (35-30) pitching throughout the night. In the top of the first, Joseph Rosa walked to open the game and was quickly picked off before Ariel Sandoval doubled to left and was followed by a Ryan Costello walk. Sandoval was then thrown out in an attempted double steal at third and no runs scored when Johnny Adams was struck out looking to end the inning.
Enoli Paredes worked five innings of relief for Quad Cities after Dean Deatz was removed after one inning in a planned rehab assignment.
LumberKings batters struggled against Paredes (1-3), who struck out the first four batters he faced. The righty picked up his first win of the season for Quad Cities, holding Clinton to just one hit while walking one and striking out seven.
Quad Cities raced out to a 2-0 lead against Wells (4-4). A leadoff walk to Alfredo Angarita and then double by Jake Meyers set the table for a Bryan De La Cruz two-run single to left.
After the first inning runs, Wells settled down to strikeout the next five batters he faced. Over a 5.1 inning outing, the lefty allowed three runs on seven hits while walking one and striking out nine.
The River Bandits added the final run of the night in the bottom of the eighth off LumberKings reliever Marvin Gorgas.
With the loss, the LumberKings magic number to clinch a playoff spot in the first half of the season remains at four games.
The LumberKings will meet the Quad Cities River Bandits for game two of their three-game series on Wednesday night. Clinton will throw right-hander Clay Chandler (3-1, 3.40) while the River Bandits will counter with righty Leovanny Rodriguez (2-0, 4.09). First pitch is slated for 6:35 PM. Fans looking to listen to the game can hear Erik Oas on the call on 100.3 FM WCCI and online at lumberkings.com via the tune in radio ap at 6:20 PM with the pregame show.
