Dobnak Hushes Cougar Offense

Geneva, Illinois - The Kane County Cougars were shutout over eight innings by Cedar Rapids Kernels' right-hander Randy Dobnak in an 8-0 loss on Tuesday night at Northwestern Medicine Field.
Akil Baddoo hit a lead-off homer for the Kernels (30-34) in the top of the first inning. Royce Lewis followed with a double and Alex Kirilloff hit a two-bagger to score Lewis and make it 2-0 Cedar Rapids. The Cougars (31-33) strung together three straight two-out singles, but stranded the bases loaded in the second.
Mirroring the first inning, the Kernels' first three batters of the fourth inning reached on hits. Robby Rinn led off with a single. Jacob Pearson doubled to put runners at second and third with no one out. The next hitter, Andrew Bechtold, laced and RBI single to give the Kernels a 3-0 cushion. Trey Cabbage bounced into a fielder's choice to make it a two-run fourth inning.
In the eighth inning, Cedar Rapids tacked on two more runs. Robby Rinn's lead-off double, earned the Kernels another tally when Jacob Pearson collected in RBI double. The Kernels received another insurance run when David Banuelos reached on an error by Cougar third baseman Ryan Tufts. In the ninth, Robby Rinn's single, his fourth hit of the night, made it 7-0.
Cougar right-hander Brian Shaffer (2-5) took the loss, surrendering four runs over six innings, striking out six and walking none. Cole Bartlett tossed the final three innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on eight hits.
Randy Dobnak (4-2) earned the win, completing a career-high eight innings. Dobnak scattered 10 hits, but did not allow a run or walk a batter. Jose Martinez hurled a scoreless final frame.
