Late Error Proves Costly as Cubs Lose 3-2

South Bend Cubs News Release
South Bend, IN: Heading to the top of the 9th inning tied at 2-2 after Chris Singleton drove in the only two South Bend Cubs runs of the night, closer Brian Glowicki took the mound.
With runners at the corners, Glowicki forced Mark Kolozsvary to dribble a routine ground ball to shortstop. On a throwing error by Jhonny Bethencourt, Kolozsvary was safe and Dayton plated the winning run. It was a bang-bang play at first as the throw was high. First baseman Austin Filiere looked to tag the runner before he touched first base. However, the call was made and not changed.
South Bend was sent down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the ninth by closer John Ghyzel. His scoreless final frame gives him his 12th save of the season.
Tuesday's game started with Rollie Lacy returning to the Four Winds Field mound for the first time since he no-hit the Fort Wayne TinCaps last week. Lacy made quick work of the Dragons for his first three innings. His no hit streak stretched to 10.1 innings before giving up a single to Stuart Fairchild in the top of the 4th.
Lacy gave up two runs, but only one was earned. On a deep drive into left field, Leandro Santana took Lacy deep to bring the Dayton lead to 2-0. It was Santana's fifth home run of the season.
The Cubs would not stay down long, however, as the red hot Chris Singleton came to the plate. Singleton, who hit his second homer of the season last night in West Michigan, doubled down the left field line to bring in two runs. Singleton's two RBI brings his total to 11 on the campaign.
Enrique De Los Rios pitched a scoreless 7th and 8th to keep South Bend and Dayton deadlocked. But the late rally for the Dragons gave them the series opener win. Cory Thompson earned the win for Dayton with 1.1 scoreless innings, while Glowicki took the tough loss with the error in the 9th.
South Bend's record drops to 33-31 after losing on Tuesday. They are still 8-2 in their past 10 games following the series victory in West Michigan where they took four out of five games. The Dragons improve to 30-33.
Game two of the three game set is scheduled for tomorrow night from Four Winds Field at 7:05 p.m. Left hander Ricky Tyler Thomas is scheduled to take the hill for the Cubs.
