Snappers Swept in Double-Header for First Time
June 12, 2018 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Beloit Sky Carp News Release
Beloit, WI - The Beloit Snappers (29-34) were swept in a Monday double-header by the Burlington Bees (28-36) by a game one score of 3-2 and a game two score of 3-1.
It was just the first time in seven double-headers this season that the Snappers were swept in both games. The double-header was the result of a rainout postponement on Saturday's game.
In the first game, the Snappers took a 1-0 lead into the fifth thanks to a Jack Meggs RBI single in the first inning to score Trace Loehr. That would be erased in the Bees half of the fifth, however, when Bees Jimmy Barnes lined a two-RBI single to take a 2-1 lead. The Bees would never trail again.
Austin Beck, en route to his first three-hit or better game since June 3rd, lined an RBI double to score Loehr again in the bottom of the seventh inning to send it into extras.
In the top of the eighth inning with Julio Garcia standing on second base, Jimmy Barnes hit a fly ball to right fielder JaVon Shelby. Shelby's throw was a strike to the plate, but it took a big hop of the lip of the grass in front of home plate and bounced over Snappers catcher Skyler Weber, with Garcia came home to score the winning run.
The Snappers went down in order in the eighth to end the game. Snappers starter Jared Poché went a season high seven innings, giving up just two earned runs. It was Nick Highberger who pitched the eighth and surrendered the unearned run to take the loss.
Game two saw the Snappers get off to another quick start. Snappers first baseman Hunter Hargrove blooped an RBI single in shallow center field to score lead off man Mickey McDonald in the first inning.
Burlington got off to an even quicker lead, though, in the first when Torri Hunter Jr. came home to score attempting to steal third. The throw from catcher Jordan Devencenzi got away from third baseman Jesus Lopez and trickled into left field.
In the second inning, Bees first baseman Connor Fitzsimons launched a towering solo home run to left field to set the Bees ahead 2-1. Fitzsimons came up big again in the sixth with an RBI double to set the score at 3-1.
Game two was a struggle for offense, with just five Snappers recording hits and two coming off the bat of Devencenzi. Starter Jean Ruiz had one of his better outings of the season, surrendering five hits and one earned runs in five innings of work with six strikeouts.
There was controversy at the end of game two. As Jack Meggs infield hit to Garcia at third was in and out of the glove, the throw to first was high and in the base path of Meggs and first baseman Fitzsimons missed the tag. However, after a meeting with between umpires Kyle Nichol and Steven Jaschinski, the call was reversed and Meggs was out.
Both managers argued for their respective sides and it overshadowed the pop out next by Nick Allen to end to end the game.
Beck's multi-hit game in game one was his 17th multi-hit game of the season, extending his team lead in that category.
The game one loss dropped the Snappers to 20-10 when they score first. The game two loss pushed the Snappers to 9-25 when the opponent scores first.
The Snappers will hit the road for a three-game trip in Peoria to take on the Chiefs. Starting game one for the Snappers is right-hander Mitchell Jordan (2-0, 1.93). He will be opposed by Chiefs right-hander Paul Balestrieri (2-2, 4.09). Game one is scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. first pitch.
