Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - The TinCaps lost to the Bowling Green Hot Rods (Tampa Bay Rays), 2-1, on Tuesday night at Bowling Green Ballpark in their series opener. The game took a brisk 1 hour, 56 minutes on a night that saw rain, thunder, and lightning begin in the eighth inning.
Right fielder Tirso Ornelas launched a solo home run in the top of the fourth inning to give the TinCaps (28-35) a 1-0 lead. It was the 18-year-old's sixth homer of the year, putting him in a tie for the team lead with Esteury Ruiz. The shot for Ornelas had an exit velocity of 99 miles per hour and a launch angle of 41 degrees. It went 388 feet.
However, that was the only run Fort Wayne could get against left-handed starter Josh Fleming, who went seven innings. In fact, the 'Caps had only one other hit off Fleming, who didn't walk anyone or hit anyone either.
Meanwhile, TinCaps All-Star lefty Nick Margevicius was strong as usual. He kept the Hot Rods off the board for five innings. Bowling Green (42-21) broke through with a run to tie the game in the sixth. Then in the seventh, first baseman Devon Davis led off with an opposite-field home run muscled over the wall in right to put the Hot Rods ahead, 2-1. Margevicius went seven innings as well with three strikeouts and no walks. He hit a batter and yielded five hits. He lowered his season ERA to 3.09.
Travis Radke followed Margevicius with a scoreless eighth, but Jhonleider Salinas came out of Bowling Green's bullpen with two scoreless, and hitless, innings to earn the save.
