Frederick Keys News Release
FREDERICK, MD - The Frederick Keys are excited to announce that Alex Wells has been named to the SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game. A contest featuring the brightest young stars in Minor League Baseball, the game will take place on Sunday, July 15 at Nationals Park in Washington, DC. An Australian, Wells will play for the World team.
A midseason Carolina League All-Star, Wells, 21, has gone 3-5 with a 3.90 ERA in 15 starts for the Keys this season. Over 80.2 innings, he has allowed 38 runs (35 earned) on 93 hits to go with 24 walks and 53 strikeouts.
Going 3-4 with a 3.57 ERA in the first half, the southpaw turned in his best outing of the year on June 11 against Lynchburg. Working a career-high eight shutout innings, he surrendered only three hits and struck out nine.
Rated the No. 8 prospect in the Orioles system according to MLB Pipeline and the No. 13 prospect according to Baseball America, Wells was recognized as the Orioles Jim Palmer Minor League Pitcher of the Year in 2017. Pitching for the Low-A Delmarva Shorebirds, Wells went 11-5 with a 2.38 ERA and walked only 10 batters in 140 innings. The fewest free rides in the MiLB among pitchers with at least 140 innings, the Australian did not walk a batter in his final 68 innings.
Signed by Baltimore as an 18-year-old out of Austrailia in 2015, Wells has an identical twin, Lachlan, who pitches for the Minnesota Twins organization.
Former Keys shortstop, Ryan Mountcastle, has also been named to the Futures Game and will play for Team USA. Currently the third baseman for the Double-A Bowie Baysox, the 21-year-old claimed the 2017 Carolina League batting crown. In 88 games with Frederick, Mountcastle slashed .314/.343/.542 to go with 15 home runs, 47 RBIs, 35 doubles, one triple and 63 runs scored.
The Keys continue their series against the Carolina Mudcats on Friday night at Five County Stadium. Left-hander Zac Lowther (3-1, 1.67) starts for Frederick and will be opposed by Carolina right-hander Braden Webb (5-5, 3.63). First pitch is at 7:00 p.m and the broadcast can be heard on frederickkeys.com and the TuneIn App.
On Monday, June 9 the Keys return home for a four-game series with the Wilmington Blue Rocks. Highlights include a Bordeleau Wine Pairing and Monocacy Brewery Happy Hour on July 11 as well as Medieval Times Night on Thursday, July 12.
