Carolina Mudcats News Release
ZEBULON, N.C. - Rosters for the 2018 SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game were announced by Major League Baseball today and former Carolina Mudcats infielder Keston Hiura was nominated to the U.S. Team and will represent the Milwaukee Brewers in the upcoming Futures Game scheduled to be played at 4:00 p.m. EDT on Sunday, July 15 at Nationals Park in Washington, DC.
Hiura began the 2018 season with the Mudcats and played in 54 games with Carolina before receiving a promotion to Double-A Biloxi on Sunday, June 1. He has since hit .326/.380/.511 with 11 doubles, two home runs and six RBI over 24 Southern League games with the Biloxi Shuckers since his promotion and through July 5.
The Valencia, CA native hit .320/.382/.529 and totaled a .911 OPS over 54 games with the Mudcats earlier this season before moving up to Double-A. He also totaled 38 runs, 66 hits, 16 doubles, three triples, seven home runs, 23 RBI, 14 walks and 47 strikeouts over his two months with Carolina.
He was exceptionally brilliant in his second month with Carolina and was named the Carolina League's Player of the Month for May after leading the league in several offensive categories. Hiura led the Carolina League in hits (46), runs (29), extra-base hits (21), total bases (81), doubles (13), slugging (.664) and OPS (1.101) back in May. He was also second in home runs (six) and third in both average (.377) and on-base percentage (.437).
The 21-year-old left the Carolina League ranked second in batting (.320), second in hits (66), first in doubles (16), first in extra-base hits (26), tied for first in slugging (.529), tied for second in runs (38) and first in total bases (109). He bid farewell to the Carolina League by going 5-for-5 with two home runs, three runs and two RBI on May 31 in Lynchburg. He totaled a career best five hits and career best two home runs in his final game with the Mudcats before moving on to Double-A.
Hiura, 21, was selected with the ninth overall pick by Milwaukee in the first round of the 2017 First-Year Player Draft out of UC Irvine. He began his professional career with the rookie level Arizona League Brewers in 2017 and hit .435/.500/.839 with a 1.339 OPS over 15 games (27 H, 18 R, 3 2B, 5 3B, 4 HR, 18 RBI) before quickly moving up to Low-A Wisconsin. Hiura went on to slash .333/.374/.476 over 27 games with the Timber Rattlers during the 2017 season. He also totaled 11 doubles, two triples and 15 RBI in his time with the Wisconsin last year.
Former Mudcats outfielder Corey Ray represented the Brewers and the Mudcats in the 2017 SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game. Former Mudcats infielder Dansby Swanson played in the 2016 All-Star Futures game, and like Hiura, began the 2016 season with the Mudcats before receiving a promotion to Double-A and then playing in the Futures Game. The 2016 Futures Game also featured former Mudcats outfielder Yandy Diaz and future Mudcats in Travis Demeritte and (current Mudcats pitcher) Phil Bickford.
The Carolina Mudcats are the proud Carolina League, Class-A Advanced affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers. First established in 1991, the two-time Southern League Champion Mudcats are entering their 28th consecutive season of baseball at Five County Stadium in Zebulon, N.C. The 2018 season marks the first for the Mudcats under the ownership of the Milwaukee Brewers organization.
