Two Wood Ducks Named to 2018 SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game Roster
July 6, 2018 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Down East Wood Ducks News Release
KINSTON, NC - The 2018 SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game rosters were released on Friday afternoon featuring Down East outfielder Leody Taveras on the World Team, and former Wood Duck C.D. Pelham representing the U.S. Team. The game features Minor League Baseball's top prospects in a USA vs. World contest.
Taveras, 19, will be one of eight teenagers to play in the game as he earns his first selection to the Futures Game. He was the youngest position player to debut on an Opening Day roster in the Carolina League in 2018. The Dominican outfielder is hitting .245 with three home runs and 29 runs batted in while also leading the team in stolen bases with 12. The All-Star is also tied for the team lead in triples with four.
Pelham, 23, was promoted to the Frisco Roughriders on June 25th after opening the season with the Wood Ducks. At the time of his promotion, Pelham was a perfect 11-for-11 in saves with the DEWDs and had not allowed an earned run with the lead all season (1R/0ER). He was named a midseason All-Star and earned the save in the Carolina League All-Star Classic. He will join the U.S. Team for the first time in his career.
Both are listed in MLB Pipeline's top 30 Rangers prospects as Taveras is currently No.1 while Pelham slots at No. 19.
On Sunday, July 15th, the teams will matchup live on MLB Network at 4:00 p.m. (ET) from Nationals Park in Washington, DC. The contest will mark the 20th year of the Futures Game with U.S. Team holding an 12-7 all-time series lead. Last year in Miami, the U.S. Team defeated the World Team 7-6 for its seventh victory in the last eight years.
Also in that game, former Down East right-hander Jonathan Hernandez joined the World Team and faced one batter in the game in the defeat.
Major League Baseball, in conjunction with MLB.com, Baseball America and the 30 Major League Clubs, selected the 25 players currently on each team. Each Major League organization is represented and players from all full-season Minor Leagues were eligible to be selected.
