Cease, Basabe Named to 2018 SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game
July 6, 2018 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Former Dash right-hander Dylan Cease and outfielder Luis Basabe have been tabbed to play in the 2018 SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game, which will take place on Sunday, July 15, at Nationals Park in Washington, D.C. The game will feature Cease as a member of the USA Team and Basabe as a member of the World Team.
Cease began the season with the Dash, entering the year as the fifth-best prospect in the White Sox system per MLB Pipeline. The 22-year-old dominated the Carolina League throughout the first half of the season, going 9-2 with a 2.89 ERA while racking up 82 strikeouts in 71.2 innings.
Cease, who was acquired by the White Sox via a trade with the Chicago Cubs as part of a package with Eloy Jimenez, Bryant Flete and Matt Rose in exchange for Jose Quintana last July, earned Carolina League All-Star honors. At the time of his promotion to Double-A Birmingham, Cease led the circuit in wins and strikeouts.
The right-hander has made two starts with the Barons, posting a 4.63 ERA and tallying 14 strikeouts in 11.2 innings.
Basabe shined in a prospect-laded outfield for Winston-Salem throughout the first half of the season. He earned White Sox co-Minor League Player of the Month honors in April after posting a .313/.400/.614 batting line, leading the Carolina League in slugging percentage and ranking eighth in batting average. Through the first month of the season, the Venezuela native also led the league in total bases (51), and he was tied for the league lead in extra-base hits (14).
Since coming to the White Sox as part of a package with Yoan Moncada, Michael Kopech and Victor Diaz in a trade with the Boston Red Sox for Chris Sale in 2016, Basabe has risen through the ranks in the White Sox system. The 21-year-old outfielder is currently ranked the 13th-best prospect in the White Sox system per MLB Pipeline, and he earned Carolina League All-Star honors as a result of his strong first half with the Dash.
Overall, Basabe hit .266 with 12 doubles and nine home runs in 58 games for Winston-Salem, leading the team in home runs and slugging percentage (.502) at the time of his promotion to Double-A Birmingham.
Cease and Basabe represent the sixth and seventh Dash alumni to participate in the All-Star Futures Game, joining Zack Collins (2017), Jimenez (2016 & 2017), Frankie Montas (2014), Yolmer Sanchez (2012) and Daniel Hudson (2009).
The SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game will be held at Nationals Park, the home of the Washington Nationals. It has been an annual part of Major League Baseball's All-Star events since 1999. The much-anticipated exhibition will take place at 4 p.m. EDT on July 15, and fans can watch the game on MLB Network and MLB.com. Radio play-by-play coverage will be available on Sirius (channel 209) and XM (channel 89).
