Errors Hurt the Wood Ducks in Fourth Straight Loss

July 6, 2018 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Down East Wood Ducks News Release

WINSTON-SALEM, NC - A wild game with dazzling plays on defense ended with the Dash (11-4, 52-33) on top 4-2 over the Wood Ducks (6-10, 41-45). Franklin Rollin had two hits on the night including a solo homer for his fourth long ball of the year.

Emerson Martinez also tossed a quality start in the loss with an 81% strike rate. He tossed six and a third innings and only allowed two earned runs of the four that were scored. The right-hander struck out three in his eighth loss of the year.

Both teams came out swinging with a solo home run in the first inning. Both offense quieted down for the next several innings. Dash starter Tanner Banks earned his eighth win of the season and his sixth career win over the Wood Ducks in as many starts.

The left-hander tossed eight innings with only two earned runs allowed while holding the Woodies to just an 0-for-4 performance with runners in scoring position.

Fueled by three DEWD errors in the game, the Dash took the lead with two unearned runs in the sixth inning on singles by Micker Adolfo and Ti'Quan Forbes. In the seventh Luis Gonzalez popped sac fly down the right field line that nearly turned into a double play at the plate.

Down East managed to respond in the eighth when Josh Altmann doubled to center to bring home Eric Jenkins. While the ball was airborne, centerfielder Luis Gonzalez lost the ball over the lights and allowed the run to score. However a double play and a groundout would neutralize the threat.

Perhaps the play of the year came to end the bottom of the eighth. A pop up by Gavin Sheets down the left field line. Alex Kowalczyk came charging in and went into a slide on the warning track, but could not secure it. The ball popped into the air off of his glove and into Anderson Tejeda's for the out. He then unleashed his cannon to first to double off the runner.

The Woodies look to snap the four-game losing streak on Saturday at 6:00 p.m with lefty Sal Mendez on the mound. He will face fellow southpaw John Parke for the Dash in the penultimate game at BB&T Ballpark for the 2018 season.
